New Fraud Alert Threat impacting ABCO Members

It has come to our attention that some members are receiving phone calls from people purporting to be from ABCO FCU regarding potential fraud on their accounts. The caller ID reflects that it is coming from ABCO and the correct phone number is shown, but it is not from the credit union.

ABCO Federal Credit Union will NEVER ask for this type of information! The scammers are then using this information to set up transactions and access to members’ accounts and credit cards.

NEW THREAT: scammers are pretending to be from a merchant (store) and are asking members to key is a code into their phone.

DO NOT ENTER ANY CODES - HANG UP AND CALL THE MERCHANT DIRECTLY!

Student Loan Forgiveness Scams

Recently, an announcement was made by the White House stating that many may be eligible for “Student Loan Relief”. Click HERE to read the Fact Sheet released by the government.

With this new announcement has also come an uptick in phishing scams targeting those that may be eligible. The scammers call or email, pretending to be from the persons Student Loan Provider or the Federal Government Agency overseeing student loans. They then ask for confidential/identifying information such as Address, Date of Birth, Social Security Number, Federal Student Aid Account and login information and Bank Account Information.

Here are some examples of false claims that may come across:

• “Act immediately to qualify for student loan forgiveness before the program is discontinued.”

• “Your student loans may qualify for complete discharge. Enrollments are first come, first served.”

• “Student alerts: Your student loan is flagged for forgiveness pending verification. Call now!”

• “You are required to pay an amount upfront to ensure you are eligible for the program”

NOTE: The FSA (Federal Student Aid) office will never call and ask for confidential information such as TINs and Account Login Information.

Click HERE for more information on Student Loan Forgiveness Scams.

Most that are eligible will not need to take any action to receive the relief.

If there are questions, the person’s Student Aid/Student Loan Provider should be contacted directly.

Protecting your Identity & Money

Fraudsters continually find new ways to trick innocent people out of money or personal identifiable information. Whether it's an imposter scam – impersonating a credit union employee, a grandchild, debt collector, etc. – or stealing someone’s identity, these fraudsters know how to pull it off.

Using common channels like emails, texts, phone calls, and social networks; fraudsters typically disguise their identify while retrieving your confidential information.

Fraudsters will use several different social engineering techniques to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and account or payment card details – all while trying to trick you into believing they are from the credit union:

• Phishing (through email)

• Vishing (through phone calls)

• SMiShing (though SMS/text messages)

• Malware (malicious software)

Fraudsters will also spoof the credit union’s contact info (phone number; email, etc.) to appear to be from the actual credit union.

One common approach used is the fraudster (impersonating the credit union) claims that fraudulent transactions have been detected on your account and the credit union needs to verify your personal information. You may be asked to identify yourself with personal information, account info, login credentials, or a one-time passcode.

Recognizing scams can be difficult. But you can minimize the potential impact by knowing what to look for, taking the right action steps, and remaining vigilant.

Common Warning Signs

Scams are often hard to detect at a quick glance; however, these common red flags can help. Keep in mind…it is not uncommon for fraudsters to use intimidation tactics and urgent requests.

• Don’t always trust the display name - criminals will spoof the email name to appear to be a legitimate sender

•Check for misspelled words, bad grammar, and/or typos within the content

• Be cautious of clicking links and opening attachments- DON'T CLICK unless you are confident of the sender or expecting the attachment

• Asking you to share a one-time passcode sent to your device (when they called you)

• Check the salutation - many legitimate businesses will use a personal salutation

• Do not provide personal information when asked

• Be suspicious of “urgent” or “immediate” response needed or “unauthorized login attempt” of your account

• Don’t believe everything you see. Brand logos, names and addresses may appear legitimate

• The recipient group seems random or unusual (e.g. all last names begin with the same letter)

• The email appears to be a reply to a message that you didn’t actually send

• Monitor the sender’s email address for suspicious URLs & domains – often using similar letters and numbers

• If something seems suspicious; contact that source with a new email or phone call, rather than just hitting reply

• Always, be wary of tempting offers

Protecting Yourself: Minimize risk from breaches, fraud & scams!

Monitor Your Credit

  • Check your credit report annually. Consumers are entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus annually. Simply go to AnnualCreditReport.com to get started. Items to watch for are “new” or “re-opened” accounts and other suspicious activity.

  • A best practice is to check your credit report three times per year by requesting the report from one credit bureau every four months.

Protect yourself from scams

  • Be mindful of emails or phone requests claiming to be from the business or financial institution which was breached.

  • Avoid opening attachments and clicking on links contained in emails received from unfamiliar sources. Phishing emails often contain attachments or links to malicious websites infected with malware.

  • Avoid clicking on links or calling the telephone number contained within text messages received from unfamiliar sources. Be wary of SMiSHing attacks which are similar to phishing but in SMS text messages.

  • To avoid tax identify fraud make a point of filing annual tax returns promptly.

  • Should you be notified that more than one return was filed in your name, owe additional tax, or that records indicate that your earnings were more than the amount of wage reported, complete an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit form 14039, and contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800.908.4490.

  • Check with the credit union to determine if account protections such as security challenge pass-phrase, account notes, and travel protections are available.

  • In general, be wary of offers that are too good to be true, require fast action, or instill a sense of fear.

Protect yourself online

  • Use strong passwords that are at least 11 characters in length that are case-sensitive and include alpha-numeric characters and at least one symbol. Use a password checker to ensure you’re using a strong password.

  • Do not use the same password for multiple websites used to conduct online transactions.

  • Be sure your home computer is protected with a firewall and antivirus / anti-malware software. A best practice is to configure the antivirus / anti-malware software to automatically check for updates at least weekly.

  • Be sure to install operating system patches when they are made available.

  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi and public computers (e.g., those found in libraries and hotel lobbies) to conduct online transactions. The use of a VPN cab make public Wi-Fi more secure.

  • When offered, use multifactor authentication for account logins or out-of-band authentication to confirm login attempts and/or transactions.

Multifactor authentication uses more than one authentication method, such as user password (something you know) and a one-time-password token (something you have), or biometrics (something you are).

Out-of-band authentication typically involves the user receiving a passcode via text message which the user must enter to complete a login or a transaction.

  • Be wary of what you’re sharing -Openly sharing information on social media can provide an identity thief with the necessary information to impersonate you, or answer certain challenge questions. Keep social media accounts private, and be cautious who you’re connecting with. Never share anything related to your credit union account, transactional history, or identifying information in unprotected public forums.

URGENT NEWS:  VIRUS SCAM ALERT UDATE 9/29/20

ATTENTION:  IMPORTANT SCAM ALERT

It has come to our attention that members have been victims of a recent scam attempt.

SCAM DETAILS:

When the individual is using their computer, an alert pops up telling them that there is a virus on their computer.  It advises them to call Microsoft immediately and provides a phone number.  When the member calls this number, they are connected to a live person that claims to need access to their computer.  When the victim complies and enables the person on the phone to gain access to their computer, the scammer tells the member that they are sending a wire into the member's account, which the member should send back to them in the form of gift cards.  In actuality, the caller has just moved the member's own funds around in the account to make it look like they received a wire.

Later, the member will come into a credit union branch to withdraw the funds to send gift cards to the scammer at the address provided.  When the member realizes that something isn't right, it's oftentimes too late, because they already sent the gift cards.  If they try to call back to the phone number, it is no longer in service.

This scam has been around for awhile and it frequently resurfaces with a different twist.  One common version of this scam starts with an email from someone that you trust - a pastor, teacher, charity, relative - asking you to send gift cards.  The sender's email account may have been spoofed.  Be sure to call the person who's name is on any request for gift cards to verify that he or she actually sent it.

Be aware!

  1. Neither ABCO FCU nor other financial institutions will contact you to ask for personal account information or to gain access to your devices.

  2. Never permit anyone that is unknown to you, or who is unauthorized, to gain access to your devices and accounts.

  3. If it sounds unusual, out-of-the-ordinary or "fishy", contact your credit union first!

A Message from ABCO FCU President, Jill Peterson

ABCO Federal Credit Union's mission is to improve the lives of our members and their families; now, during this pandemic, this is especially true as we work diligently to meet your needs. Our top priority is the health and safety of our members and staff, while fulfilling our essential mission to ensure your access to funds and financial services. We are focused on bringing everyone through this crisis in good fiscal and physical health.

First and foremost, I want you to know that your funds are secure! Be assured that even during these challenging times, your credit union is healthy and a safe financial institution in which you could trust your funds and all of your transactions. With comprehensive electronic security policies and procedures, we are always alert to detect risks and prevent problems. We're also watching out for our members, providing you with information to help you avoid the latest scams. Be vigilant and contact us directly if you have questions about your accounts. Remember, we won't reach out to you via regular email to obtain any confidential information.

ABCO Federal Credit Union is here to help our members. We are responding to this unprecedented challenge by offering our members some useful options to ease the strain on your finances if you've been negatively impacted by the Coronavirus. We are permitting deferred payments and skip-a-pays on most loans (conditions apply to certain loan types); mortgage and home equity loan deferments for hardship situations; fees waived for early withdrawals on share certificates; an emergency loan program; and an auto loan refinance program with no payment for 90 days (conditions apply to this offer).

To protect our members and staff, we continue to follow the Executive Orders of the Governor of the State of New Jersey and the guidelines of the CDC. We've limited contact by reducing lobby hours in some locations and eliminating them in others. Loans are generally being delivered electronically, although for those who need an in-person closing, appointments are available. Our offices are continuously supplied with disinfectant cleaners, gloves and masks and we ask that any member that enters one of our facilities also wears a mask. ABCO is very attentive to social distancing, maintaining some staff in our offices with adequate room and others are working remotely. We're doing everything we could to avoid unnecessary contact, while delivering the services that are vital to our members.

As we work through this challenge, the staff and volunteers of ABCO Federal Credit Union extend our thoughts and wishes for good health to all of our members, even as we offer our most sincere condolences to those who have lost a beloved family member or friend. We look forward to that day when we could all come back together again, in physical and fiscal health, focused on a bright and rewarding future!

Stimulus Payments Being Issued/Check the Status of Your Payment

The Department of the Treasury has announced that financial institutions have begun receiving Economic Impact (Stimulus) Payments for their account holders. Below you will find information to help you understand the process.

The IRS urges the public not to call them to inquire regarding this stimulus payment. The IRS will calculate and automatically send the economic impact payment to those who are eligible. Check the Status of Your Payment at IRS.gov

If you have already filed your 2019 tax returns, the IRS will use this information to calculate the payment amount. For those who have not yet filed your return for 2019, the IRS will use information from your 2018 tax filing to calculate the payment. The economic impact payment will be deposited directly into the same account reflected on the return filed.

Members who receive Social Security Benefits or Railroad Retirement benefits will have the EIP deposited to the account where those benefits are directed.

Members who receive their IRS tax refund via check will receive the EIP payment by check as well. These checks will look like the tax return checks but will reflect that it is an EIP Payment in the memo area of the check.

For security reasons, the IRS plans to mail a letter about the Economic Impact payment to the taxpayer's last known address within 15 days after the payment is made. The letter will provide information on how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment. If you are unsure if you're receiving a legitimate letter, the IRS urges you to visit IRS.gov first.

IMPORTANT: The IRS urges taxpayers to be on the lookout for scam artists trying to use the economic impact payments as cover for schemes to steal personal information and money. The IRS will not call, text, email or contact you on social media asking for personal or bank account information at any time - even related to the economic impact payments. Emails with attachments or links claiming to have special information about economic impact payments or refunds should not be accessed.

For the most up to date information, we encourage you to visit www.irs.gov/coronavirus

Social Security Administration Warns Consumers to Be on the Lookout for Scams

The Social Security Administration (SSA) advised consumers to be cognizant of scammers pretending to be government employees trying to scare and trick people into giving away personal information.
The SSA said if you receive a suspicious phone call, hang up, don’t give away any information, and report the scam at oig.ssa.gov.
Scammers will typically call or email saying there is a problem with an individual’s Social Security Number or account. They may also ask someone to pay a fine or debt with non-traceable funds such as retail gift cards, wire transfers, pre-paid debit cards, internet currency, or by mailing cash. The scammers also threaten consumers with arrest or legal action, something the SSA will never do.

Lenape Regional High School holds a Financial Reality Fair

On Monday, January 13, 2020, select students of the Lenape High School participated in an interactive, hands-on event called a Financial Reality Fair. Using customized budget worksheets that provided them with the starting salary for their career of choice, students visited booths to make real life purchases necessary for them to live while staying within their monthly budget. Students were required to make spending choices on first time purchases for basics such as housing, transportation, clothing and food. They were also tempted with trips, pets and other non-essential spending choices with the goal of living within their means. ABCO Federal Credit Union was happy to work alongside other credit union staff, volunteers and vendors as well as board of education volunteers to bring this unique experience to the school.

NJ Financial Literacy Act Goes Into Effect

12-12-18 - Ocean County Community College, Toms River, NJ ABCO FCU volunteered with area credit unions and the NJCUL to offer students a fun reality fair!

12-12-18 - Ocean County Community College, Toms River, NJ
ABCO FCU volunteered with area credit unions and the NJCUL to offer students a fun reality fair!

In cooperation with Governor Phil Murphy and the New Jersey Legislature, Acting Governor Sheila Oliver signed A-1414 into law on Jan. 3, 2019. The new law requires financial literacy instruction to pupils enrolled in grades six through eight. Instruction will include content on budgeting, savings, credit, debt, insurance, investment, and other issues associated with personal financial responsibility as determined by the State Board.

"I am delighted the financial literacy bill was signed into law, so students can receive education on key topics that they will need for the rest of their lives," Senator Addiego said. "We must reach people early on in life so they can plan ahead and build a foundation of financial knowledge that will help them live an independent lifestyle."

NJ credit unions have been partnering with the NJ Credit Union League to sponsor Financial Reality Fairs to students since 2010.

WHAT IS A FINANCIAL REALITY FAIR?

A reality fair is a fun way for students to learn about managing finances. The program is offered to students from 6th grade through college with no cost to the school. Grants are offered from the New Jersey Credit Union Foundation for NJCUL member credit unions.

Beware of Scams Related to Ukraine Efforts

Fraudsters look for every opportunity to prey on the kindness of others and the current situation in Ukraine provides an opportunity for a number of fundraising schemes to emerge.

Tips to Avoid Falling Victim to Fundraising Schemes:

  • Research the organization requesting the donation. If you are not familiar with them or it feels uncomfortable, find an organization you know and trust instead.

  • Be wary of phone calls, texts and emails (often with a link to a spoofed website), social media networks and banner ads.

  • Do not click on links or an attachment to donate online in an email from someone unknown to you.

  • Do not provide personal identifying information or debit/credit card numbers in response to an unsolicited charitable request.

  • Be wary of anyone requesting wire transfers or cryptocurrency. Do not donate gift cards.

  • If you feel you have been a victim of a fraud, call 800-225-1859.
